(neuromodulators, i.e. Botox®, Dysport®, Xeomin®, Nuceiva®)

black woman with radiant glowing skin

Neuromodulators such as Botox®, Xeomin®, Dysport®, and Nuceiva® can be used to temporarily weaken the muscles that cause wrinkles. This can help smooth the face, soften fine lines and wrinkles, and prevent deeper lines from forming.

Botox® and other neuromodulators can also be placed in the lower face to subtly alter and improve appearance. For example, Botox® can be used to slim the face and jawline, reduce a “gummy smile,” and make the lips appear larger.

Botox® type treatments can also be used therapeutically. Some examples are to reduce sweating in the armpits, hands and feet; help treat migraines; and to alleviate the symptoms of TMJ, aka pain from jaw clenching.

The effects of Botox® type injections typically last two to four months and the smoothing of wrinkles is usually visible three to five days after injection, with maximum effect typically a week or two following injection. Muscles can be treated repeatedly to maintain the smoothed appearance and prevent new lines from forming.

Botox® was approved for medical use in Canada in 1990, and for cosmetics in 2001. Millions of North Americans have had Botox and other neuromuscular blocking agent injections. Botox has become one of the most popular and frequently used cosmetic treatments.
